Dental Cleanings

Gentle, thorough cleanings for a healthier smile

What is a Dental Cleaning?

A dental cleaning is a preventive procedure performed by a dental hygienist or dentist to remove plaque, tartar, and stains from your teeth. These cleanings are essential for maintaining oral health and preventing the onset of gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath.

When Should You Get a Dental Cleaning?
You should schedule a dental cleaning every six months, or as recommended by your dentist, to maintain optimal oral health. If you have a history of gum disease or excessive plaque buildup, your dentist might suggest more frequent cleanings.

During a dental cleaning at Radiant Dental Health, our dental hygienists use specialized instruments to remove plaque (a sticky bacterial film) and tartar (hardened plaque) from your teeth. The process typically includes:

  • Scaling: Removal of plaque and tartar from the tooth surface and just below the gumline.
  • Polishing: Using a high-powered brush and gritty toothpaste to polish your teeth and remove surface stains.
  • Flossing: Thorough flossing to clean between your teeth and remove any remaining debris.

Post-Cleaning Recommendations:
After a dental cleaning, you may experience mild gum sensitivity or bleeding, but this should subside within a day or two. Here are some tips to follow:

  • Brush and Floss Gently: Resume brushing and flossing, but be gentle around sensitive areas, especially near the gumline. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a toothpaste with fluoride to help strengthen your enamel.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drinking water throughout the day helps wash away food particles and bacteria, keeping your mouth clean and fresh.
  • Use an Antibacterial Mouthwash: If recommended by your dentist, use an antibacterial mouthwash to reduce bacteria and promote gum health.

Regular dental cleanings help prevent cavities, gum disease, and even tooth loss. They also contribute to a bright, healthy smile. If you’re prone to dental issues or simply want to maintain your oral health, biannual cleanings are a must.
