Periodontal Maintenance

Ongoing care for healthy gums and teeth

What is Periodontal Maintenance?

Periodontal maintenance is an advanced cleaning procedure designed for patients with a history of gum disease (periodontitis). It is a deeper, more thorough cleaning than regular cleanings and is focused on controlling the progression of gum disease.

When Should You Get Periodontal Maintenance?

Periodontal maintenance is recommended every 3 to 4 months for patients with past or current periodontal disease. This procedure is necessary to manage gum inflammation, prevent further bone loss, and stop the disease from progressing.

Learn more about Periodontal Maintenance at Radiant Dental Health:

At Radiant Dental Health, periodontal maintenance involves removing plaque and tartar from the root surfaces below the gum line (known as root planing) and treating areas of infection. The process includes:

    • Deep Scaling: A more comprehensive version of scaling, focusing on deeper pockets around the teeth where bacteria accumulate.
    • Root Planing: Smoothing the roots of your teeth to prevent bacteria from reattaching.
    • Evaluation: Our dentist, Periodontist or Hygienist will monitor your gum health, checking for signs of inflammation, bleeding, or pocket depth changes.

Post-Treatment Recommendations:

After periodontal maintenance, it’s normal to experience some gum tenderness or sensitivity. Following these tips can aid your recovery and keep gum disease under control:

    • Rinse with Salt Water: Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) can help soothe gums and reduce inflammation.
    • Stick to Soft Foods: For the first 24–48 hours, opt for soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and soup to avoid irritating your gums.
    • Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Smoking and alcohol can slow healing and increase the risk of infection. It’s best to avoid these for at least 48 hours.
    • Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Continue to brush twice a day and floss, but be extra gentle around the gums. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles and consider using interdental brushes to clean between the teeth.
    • Attend Follow-Up Appointments: Periodontal maintenance is a long-term commitment. Schedule follow-up cleanings and exams every 3–4 months to prevent the return of gum disease.

This procedure is vital for maintaining the health of your gums and bones after periodontal disease has been treated. By scheduling regular periodontal maintenance, you reduce the risk of further gum and bone damage, which can ultimately lead to tooth loss if left untreated.
